Are you kidding me????

I am seriously irritated by the Paula Abdul thing. As you all know, I am a fan of American Idol, as are millions of like-minded people. And I cannot believe that in this day and age, we still are facing such grotesque proof that men are paid more than women, and that sniping comments about talent are somehow valuable than nurturing it. I'm not saying that Ryan and Simon don't deserve the huge paydays--they do. But so does Paula. She started out with the show at the beginning, for gosh sakes. It infuriates me! I don't know you about you all, but I will think seriously about watching the show this fall...

AARRGH.

Agree 100%. I'm disgusted about it all, and will think twice before tuning in.

It's soooo sad that inequality still exists among men and women! Can't believe Paula has been on the show since the beginning and not rewarded for her contribution.

However, I also have a huge problem with the insane salaries most athletes, celebrities, CEOs, media and so on make. We elevate them to "idols" almost like royalty. And, we wonder why our world is so out of balance.

I know my take will not be popular among you. I stopped watching "American Idol" last season for the above reasons. The very term "idol" disturbs me.
Prefer "America's Got Talent." :)

Blessings,

Patricia

Patricia--

I totally get where you're coming from, and yes, some salaries are insanely high and us ordinary folk have trouble comprehending. My point is just that whatever the salary is, it needs to be based on valur and contribution, not sexism. It's offensive that Paula, one of the originators of the show, is offered something like 25 % of what Ryan Seacrest was given. Thats all. Every now and then the inequality of all of it gets to me. I guess this is one of those moments. Thank goodness they're rare. :) Thanks for showing up on facebook!

Runescape gold--

The thing about this kind of inequality is that this particular instance might not bother you because you're not a fan, but it can always hit closer to home, so it's good to point it out and take a stand whenever it happens. That's my take, anyway, but I appreciate you chiming in. Diverse opinions are always important. :)

You know guys-

Yes, Patricia, the name "idol" gets to me, too... but, I mean, is there anything completely wholesome on TV? (Truthfully, I miss the days of "Doc", "Second Noah", "Life Goes On" , that kind of thing...

I like Paula and Ryan seems very nice... it's not cool that she should not be payed equally, though.

I think I'm going to join the cast of Grey's Anatomy so I can make $450,000 an episode. That's like, sick.

If I made that kind of money I'd have the whole KH library set in gold :)

Understand your frustration!

Kristin,
Do believe sexism is totally wrong and Paula should be equally compensated.

Don't give up too soon. Too much public outrage. Don't believe the negotiation doors are locked. The show won't air for 6 months and I sense that they will re-engage with Paula. Too much bad press -- not a good thing!

Glad you liked the Firefly Birthday card. My only concern is, by scanning the card on your facebook, could I get in trouble with copyright laws? Just a thought.

Michelle,

*LOVED* Life Goes On. Also loved American Dreams from a few years ago. I swear...every show I like goes off the air. A zillion channels and literally nothing on. I have started watching, from the beginning, Gilmore Girls. Never watched it before and I really enjoy it. The jokes are now a tad dated, but still fun.

I agree with all of you...the inequality is totally ridiculous, as are the astronomical salaries.

I was--and still am--so upset over this. Who would have thought women would still be fighting for equal pay in 2009?!?!

I can't say I like a lot of feel good television (other than my new guilty pleasure of The Wizards of Waverly Place), but I did love Early Edition. The boy had a strange thing for Joan of Arcadia. Like he owns them and is still outraged that it went off the air. Weirdo.

That said, up until 2 years ago, I made more than the husband so, yay, me. My office is pretty much all women and the boy's past 4 bosses were women so there are good examples out there.

I've never seen an entire episode of American Idol so can't comment there, but people have definite views. Even people who didn't like Paula seem to miss her.
