Reality TV calls...

Good evening--

Well, much has been going on this week, I have to say. I should have posted a new blog entry a few days ago, but things have been so crazy I haven't had time. And what am I doing, you ask? Going on another grand and exciting tour? Celebrating the best selling success of Firefly Lane? Sitting on the beach with a good book?

None of the above. I've been revising next year's book during the day, and...watching all my television shows at night! Lost! American Idol! (Go David!) Project Runway (yay Christian!!), Prison Break. It's been a veritable bonanza after the tundra of the writer's strike. So, anyone who wants to float some LOST theories my way, they will be put to good use. :)

Also, I finally got around to watching Across the Universe, and I have to say, I was totally blown away by this creative, innovative, stunning movie. The performances were simply heartbreaking and the music rocked. How can you go wrong with the Beatles? It's got some crazy, someone-took-too-many-drugs parts, but the whole was better than the sum of some of those parts. I'd love to hear if other people liked it as well as I did. Especially because my husband picked the last five movies--all dark, depressing, shoot-before-talking downers. So ATU was a breath of fresh air.

And speaking of movies, I spoke with my agent today and we had an interesting talk that you all might enjoy. Movie casting. My film agent for Firefly Lane is out talking to actors and actresses and producers about making the novel into a film, and the question keeps coming up: who should we cast?

So, I'm asking you for help. Those of you who have read Firefly, who would you cast in the lead roles? Please, I'm really interested in your answers...

I know you'll wonder who I think is right, and I promise I'll tell you. As soon as I hear from you.

Thanks for the spoilers input, too. The answer is in: no spoilers for now. So if one of your posts isn't up, that's probably the reason. Please don't hesitate to try again, though; we'd all love to hear from you.

Aloha, and bye for now...it's time for Idol...

I just read your book in a day. WOW, A friend let me borrow her book and what a book was it. I LOVED Kate and Tully and Johnny and Marah and Chad. I felt I was a part of the story. Thank you for such a great story. Wow. A movie would be so wonderful, I so LOVED this story and was so sad for it to end. So here's my input for actors/actresses:
Kate- Jessica Beil or Sandra Bullock
Tully- Reese Witherspoon or Meg Ryan
Johnny- Clive Owen HANDS DOWN.
Chad-Joshua Jackson or Jude Law

Thank you for such a wonderful book, I am looking forward to reading Mystic Lake.

I'm horrible at casting as I'm not a visual reader. I don't picture any characters ever. I couldn't even tell you any characters' physical attributes. Still, it's exciting to hear it may come to the theaters. I can't wait to hear others' suggestions though!

My tv shows don't come back until mid-March - How I Met Your Mother is back on 3/17. The Husband is excited for the season finale of The Wire tomorrow though.

As for movies, I have a bunch of movies on DVD, but I lose control of the tv most of the time. I watched Wild Hogs, silly fun. A bunch of my friends and I watched Gone Baby Gone around Oscar time, and I thought it was a well done movie though definitely sad.

I'm not going to be much help on casting. Like April, I never picture characters as I'm reading and, believe me, it's a struggle to remember to write what they look like in my own books! LOL!

I was blown away by Firefly Lane and have spent the last week since I finished reading it thinking about all of the friendships I've had in my life. Thanks for the journey.

I do have a LOST theory to float your way...I think Michael is Ben's guy on the boat. What do you think? I hear we're going to find out this week. Can't wait!

Hey Kristin..

I am still mulling over who could play such phenomenal characters for a Firefly Lane movie.. Would you please do me a favor though? When you are negotiating for the movie and the script writing, etc.. Could you please make sure that they don't cut out so much of the movie that your readers become disappointed in the movie? I have seen so many movies that were scripted from an author's really great book, only to be really disappointed to find that the movie only had vague characteristics of the book itself. Perhaps talk them into a mini-series, I don't know. I really cannot picture being able to stuff everything about this book that makes it so incredible into a 2 hour movie. The audiobook was 15 hours long! This book has Gone with the Wind capabilities, ya know? I cannot see how you could possibly cut any of the plot out of it and do the book, your hard work to write it, nor your diehard fans any justice.

There is an actress that I think would be great for Kate's role..She has played roles like Kate deals with in her past roles, and she is really good with them. Plus she has this understated beauty that fits the role of Kate so well. Her name is Leslie Kay, and she plays Felicia on The Bold and the Beautiful. Yeah, I know.. it is a soap opera.. but you didn't specify what type of actress you wanted our thoughts on..:)

There are SO many wonderful actresses out there.. Julia Roberts would play a great role in either of the ladies.. She played Erin Brockovich really well.. She also played in Sweet Magnolia's and she is phenomenal. I think she would fit Tully to a "T".

It would be ironic for Richard Gere to play Johnny, wouldn't it?

Did you ever see the movie StepMom? If not, you should rent it, because the girl in there that plays the young girl to whom Julia Roberts is her stepmom, would be PERFECT for Marah's role.. Especially as she gets older. The twins could be played by the little boys who play Lynette's boys on Desperate Housewives.

Scarlett Johansen would be great for either role too. She really can act.. So can Charlise Theron.
Angelina Jolie would be great as Kate, I think.

I would like to see what Courtney Cox could do with the role of Tully..but I think she may be too short..

Chad is a tough one.. I will have to think on that one, along with Kate's parents, and Tully's Grandmother, Grandfather, and Mom.

I will probably change my mind a hundred times before I am done.. but for now.. these would be my suggestions..

Oh, I have not seen Across the Universe yet. It is on it's way to me from Netflix as I type this post.. I will let you know what I think. I was born in 1963, and I don't have a real definitive memory of listening to the Beatles a lot from 1963 to the early 1970s..I remember Paul McCartney from that period more than from his Beatle days..My mom and dad were nuts about Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis.. (Don't ask ME!! I will never get what my mom saw in Jerry Lee and his piano) Elvis, I thought he rocked! Probably just like millions of other female fans. but my favorite of all time was Elton John.. Lots of singers in that time moved me with their music.. but Elton did something else to my psyche..I just loved his music..

Anyway.. once again, I gotta get to work for the folks that pay me to do so... Talk to you later.. :)

Hello,
Firefly Lane is the first book of yours I've read and I'm hooked. Someone on B&N.com commented that you made them both love and hate the characters. That's exactly it, I loveandhate Tully and Kate.

I also want to say: I am NOT a cryer. But the ending had me bawling.

Thank you for a beautiful read; you have a new fan in me. =D

I think that Sally Fields would be wonderful as Mrs. Mularky. Tully's grandmother I am still on the fence about. The actors/actresses have to be able to step up and really do each role a lot of justice, and that can narrow the playing field down quite a bit.. :)

Sooo, are you going to be writing a new post soon? I just watched Idol from last night.. I think the one from the Phillipines will be hitting the road tonight. I was expecting David Archeletta to really blow Yesterday out of the water, but he didn't even do that song.. I think that he will make it through to the next round, but not on this week's performance. It just wasn't his best..

I really pull for Carly and Brooke.. along with David A. and Chikezie.. Yes, I am sure that I am spelling their names really badly.. Long day, and it just started!

I've not read your book. In fact I found you on a bookreporter page where someone wrote about your book. It sounds like a book I want to get. So this is my first visit to your site and to learn about you. I promise it won't be my last. God Bless you greatly.

I absolutely loved this book...I always create the look of characters in my mind but I'm having trouble finding the "right" actress/actors...however I for sure agree that Kate is Sandra bullock...and as teenage Kate, I see Alexa bledel (from gilmore girls)...and tully could be reese witherspoon...but I don't feel as strongly about that one.

Loved Firefly Ln! I had a few ideas on characters...for Tully: Claire Danes, Amanda Peet, Bridget Fonda, Katherine Heigel, Julia Stiles. For Katie: Sarah Michelle Geller, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ashley Judd, Jenn Aniston. I know, I am reaching for the A-listers, but if you are dreaming, dream big! I had a hard time trying to find someone who could do young and mature...guess that's why I slanted a bit younger.

I finished Mystic Lake the other day - read it in one sitting. You made me stay up all night again! I got my DH to search for your pastcopies - gave him a list!

I think I am giving Firefly lane to all the females in my life for Christmas. It made me write about 10 real letters - on paper - to old friends!

I would like to share with you my thoughts on a cast.

Johnny-Adrian Grenier
Chad-Richard Wright (from Sex in the City)
Tully- Jenna Malone as young Tully and Julianne Moore as the adult Tully.
Kate-Emma Roberts as the young Kate and Julia Roberts as the adult Kate
Cloud-Felicity Huffman
Mrs. Mularkey-Kathy Bates
Mr. Mularkey-James Gandolfini
Tully's Grandmother-Diane Ladd
Tully's Grandfather-Jack Nicholson
Marah-Madison Petits for the young Marah and Selena Gomez for the teenage Marah

Best of luck with bringing your book to life. I do hope the movie will stay true to the novel.

Hey Kristin..
I just gotta ask.. Are you ever gonna tell us who you think would play the lead roles the best if Firefly Lane is made into a movie? Come on out of hiding and tell your devoted fans your thoughts.. :)

Inquiring minds want to know..
I still vote for Sally Fields as Kate's mom..The more I think about it, Julia Roberts would be great as Tully..even though blonde is NOT Julia's hair color..She is SO not cut out for blonde hair..

The rest of my choices are still good ones, IMHO..

I check every day to see if you have posted a new blog entry.. I am really trying to be patient.. :)

I am, I swear.. LOL

I just had to comment. I don't really ever think about WHO would be playing the roles when I am reading a book, but in this case, Helen Hunt comes to mind ....for for some reason.

Of course, Julia Roberts would fit Tully to a T!

And, for Johnny....the guy who plays McDreamy on Grey's Anatomy (can you tell I don't watch it much?)

I am still reading Firefly Lane and OH MY GOSH, I love it! This is the very first book of yours I have read and I can tell you if the rest are even half as good, I am a fan for life. :-)

I get so many recommendations on Yahoo book groups for authors, my list is HUGE!

I'll keep checking back to see who gets the lead roles in your movie!

I feel the same way, as another commenter....I hope they don't cut too much out! I think it should be a mini series, too!

I know as soon as I press submit, I'll think of other actors/actresses :-)
