Getting to know you, getting to know all about you
Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me...

The minute April suggested the great idea of a "Getting to Know You" post, who didn't immediately think of the song from the King and I? (Or am I the only one who has watched that movie a million times and still gets swept away each and every time?)

So, Fireflies, no being bashful, no lurking. Let's all post a little bit about ourselves so when Kristin comes home she knows all of us a little better. I'll start. And I just might have to drop a few tidbits about Kristin as you Fireflies start telling us about yourself.......

As many of you know, I have the best job in the world: I'm Kristin's assistant. Best job. Best boss. Hands down. I have three wonderful kids who keep my husband and I running from dawn till dusk, too many darn animals, a treadmill I really, really try to use, a house that is never clean enough, a garden that needs weeding, and I am always anxiously seeking that next amazing book that makes me forget everything else. And this year my dream of selling my first novel came true. It still feels surreal. Though I'm sure that feeling will disappear once I receive the critique from my editor. :)

Okay, next Firefly..........

Okay, I will go next!

I'm in my late 20's. I'm an intern architect (meaning working my way towards licensure) and absolutely love my job because I'm lucky enough to be working my dream job.
My life consists of (in no particular order) the most wonderful boyfriend in the whole wide world, we will be EIGHT years in November. Insane. My wonderful family who have gone above and beyond any family, supporting me through college and taking a lot of crap from me. My beautiful, beautiful, wonderful niece & nephews whom I spoil to the moon and back; what else are aunts for? =D We are proud homewoners with a crazy mangey puppy (she's 2.5 but I'll always call her a puppy), she is the sweetest but most rambunctious dog you've met. Good friends are hard to come by and we have a few right now that we treasure.

My dreams and aspirations?
Be married w/kids and a licensed architect before I'm 30....I need to get in gear! haha. See Europe; go on a crazy intense backpacking trip for however long possible. Just be and have everyone I love be happy and healthy.
And oh, own a pair of Jimmy Choos. =D

Hi fellow flies, and new friends!

I am Lisa - 38 years old
Newlywed !! WooHoo - finally found my soulmate!
One daughter (19) and a stepson (14)
Life is good, I'm slammed with my job right now, and work too much, but who doesn't at one time or another.
I am Executive Assistant to the Internet President in our company, and insanely jealous (smile) of Kim, I want her job.
My favorite things are to read, write, and see movies. I don't have much time for anything but reading lately. Spare time seems rare, and with the holidays approaching, it will only get busier.
I was one of the lucky two who got to read True Colors first (yay us, Cindy W !!!), and I can't wait for the final version to be released so I can buy it. You guys are going to love it.
Ok, trivial things .....
My favorite color is pink.
My favorite flower is a gerbera daisy.
My hero is my 90 year old grandmother, Daisy.
I get my strength from God; my confidence from my husband, and my peace from my daughter.
If I could spend one day with someone who has passed, it would be my husband's mother.
My mantra is: BE TRUE TO YOU!
My favorite Kristin Hannah book is a tie between Magic Hour and True Colors.
Other favorite books include: Shell Seekers (Rosemunde Pilcher), Kane & Abel (Jeffrey Archer), The Rescue (Nicholas Sparks)..... there is not enough blog space for my favorite books.
Favorite movies include: Serendipity, Sweet Home Alabama, Remember The Titans, Fargo, Under the Tuscan Sun, Officer and a Gentelmen, Pretty Woman, and probably my all time favorite, The Usual Suspects.

OK, enough about me. Next ?????

Hi Guys! Congrats Kim, let us know details, us Fireflies want to help you out!

I am Cindy, 31. I work in the financial industry *gasp*! I live in Florida, I've never seen snow and adore the beach. My hubby's passion, besides family, is surfing and baseball. I've been married for 12.5 years with 3 kids, 11 year old son, and daughters ages 9 and 3(hurricane baby!).

I love sports, reading and crafts. I am usually on the go, my son plays baseball year round and my 9 year old daughter is involved in Girl Scouts and plays the piano. My 3 year old daughter has informed me that she wants to play baseball with the boys (watch out!). We try to have a family movie night once a week.

This year I have 3 kids in 3 schools, so it's been a little crazy getting used to it all. I have a 6 year old pug named Princess Leia that adores my 3 year old and has assigned herself as protector and dress up partner to her.

Favorites
Ice cream: Rock Road
Book: A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught
Movie: Pride and Prejudice (BBC Version)
Baseball Team: Tampa Bay Rays

Dreams
Car: Chevy Tahoe w/ Quad seating (new fuel friendly one)
Vacation: Scotland
Goal: Finishing the book I started

Enough about me, let's talk about you!

I always feel very pageant contest when I answer these things.

Hi, my name is april. I live right outside of Washington D.C. I'm 33. I've been married 9 years last Friday. We have one daughter who is 1 at the end of the month. I'm in the process of getting a fake promotion at work (a new title and more money as a way to get me to do more of the same work) at a direct mail fundraising agency. I have a B.A. in English and a M.B.A. in Management.

I love reading and watching tv. I don't have a favorite book, but my favorite tv show of the moment is Friday Night Lights. Scrubs and Bones are a close second along with How I Met Your Mother. I'm kind of a loser in that that's almost all I do, but I try to get out more now that we have the baby.

My favorite authors are Jill Barnett, Tess Gerritsen, Kristin Hannah, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, LaVyrle Spencer, Susan Wiggs among many others. My favorite Kristin Hannah book is If You Believe though Magic Hour and A Handful of Heaven are favorites as well. I own them all and actually paid over $20 on an out-of-print once (because I'm crazy like that). Once in Every Lifetime was the book that hooked me in the late 90's, but I actually had to return it because it fell apart and exchanged it for The Enchantment. Later, I rebought Once in Every Lifetime.

P.S. I agree. The King & I is SOOOO good. Darned if I don't cry every single time I see it. Love it as a live play, too.

Let me just say, all of you are sooo much better at this than I am. I LOVE reading your posts!!!

Whoo Hoooo former lurker Anita. Way to come out of hiding!! LOL My father's family is from Wisconsin. Lots of dairy farmers in the family. I have three sisters, and one of my favorite memories is all of us sitting on the grass with the sun beating down on us rolling around a canning jar of fresh heavy cream until it turned into butter. Wish you lived closer so I could have you come help me in my garden!!!! :) Good luck on your writing. Keep us posted.

Wendy your comment about Jimmy Choos absolutely cracked me up. I'd love to just try on a pair!! And you are so right about family--my daughter has struggled with health issues for many years and I absolutely would not have survived if not for my husband, mom and dear friends. Be sure and let us know when you go from intern to full architect so we can have a cyber celebratin for you!!!

Okay, Lisa, you really out did me. Love how listed your favorites. And the strength, confidence, peace sentence made me absolutely sigh. For any new fireflies, Kristin posted a pic of Lisa and her new hubby and family a month or so ago. What a beautiful happy family!!

Cindy, you MUST give us the scoop on three year old Hurricane daughter. Is this like when there's a major blackout and nine months later, baby boom?!?!? :) Last year my three kids were in three different schools. It was... (I'll let you all fill in the blank). I have read Kingdom of Dreams at least twenty times. That's probably rather pathetic to admit but Judith McNaught just absolutely sweeps me away. My sons do baseball when not in football so I know of what you speak. :) And if I was really going to open up, I'd tell you that during my bouts of insomnia I watch the five hour version of Pride and Prejudice every night. LOVE LOVE that movie except for one line. I have to plug my ears when that line is about to be said! LOL

Happy Anniversary, April!! And I can't believe your little girl is almost a year old already. So many of your favorite authors are mine. Recently I went through a Lavyrle Spencer phase and re-read all of my favorites of hers. Can't wait until the new year and the newest from SEP. I also saw some GREAT news on Jill Barnett's bulletin board. Very exciting!!! Jill's such a wonderful, wonderful person.

All right, off to make dinner. (Such an exciting life). Can't wait for more Fireflies to post.

It's been a couple of busy months and I'd kinda gotten away from checking this site often. I think the new improvements are very cool!
Let's see...
I'm Shirley. I'm 31. I live in IL. I was married in June 07 and widowed in April 08. Don't feel sorry for me --- I was married to the most wonderful man and we learned to live for every single moment --- it's just part of who I am now. (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jimmorse if you want more of that scoop). I have step kids that live in the Dallas area who are 20 and 21 and oodles of nieces and nephews. My brother has five kids 7 and under and my husband came from a family of 9! Lots of little ones to love on which is great for me!
My degree is in Counseling Psychology and after a two-year "Jim intensive" regime (happily!) I'm starting to work back into the "real world" in regards to work.
I think those are the highlights for now. I'll be back soon. :)

{{Hugs}} Shirley for all you've gone through. The website you have created to celebrate the life of your husband is such a beautiful testament to a man who is obviously loved and dearly missed by so many. I think your brother and his wife deserve a medal for raising five kids ages seven and under. Yikes! :) I too come from a large family and LOVE it. So glad you like the changes to the website--I know Kristin will be excited to hear that.

I've never seen The King and I, must put on Netflix list. Lisa, I forgot to mention that I won True Colors and it was AMAZING. This was a great idea.

Shirley, I just read Jim's story, I can't say how much it touched me, as I can barely see the computer screen. Good luck in your new journey.

Lisa, So happy for you!

UTH HMM... Okay now for a smile. Hurricane Baby Story- Hurricane Season '04 was very active for us in Florida. We have 4 big ones and a bunch of tropical storms. Well, there was one Hurricane named Frances that took 3 days to graze across our state. We had no power for a long time and could not go out side. We rationed food and batteries. There was only so many games of cards you could play! And there was no sunshine. It was a long Labor Day Weekend. So my baby girl, Lindsey (Should have been Lindsey Frances, but I decided against it) was born 9 months later and it's the joke of the family when hurricanes come around. There was a HUGE jump in births at the hospital that month, so I know it wasn't just us!

Shirley, your website tribute to Jim is amazing. What touched me most while perusing it was how many people are thanking you for inspiring them to fight their own cancer battle. I always believe that if God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. You are a beautiful example of true faith. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Kim - I think Kristin will be so proud of you. You're doing a GREAT job of keeping us going and blog-busy while she is enjoying time off.

I am having so much fun learning more about all of you guys!

That's about it, besides my family of course. I've lived in AZ my whole life. I must admit I've never seen the King and I either! Which is weird if you knew me, because I LOVE musicals! My dream is to go to New York City( never been) and see all the musicals I can. Love reading all about you guys. Love, love Kristin Hannah! Her and Nicholas Sparks are my fav! Magic Hour is my all time favorite book. Can't wait to read everybody else' s comments and look forward to reading more into Kristin's wonderful trip!

Welcome Andi our newest Firefly!!! When Kristin started blogging, we decided we needed a nickname for all of us bloggers and since the book that brought this all about was Firefly Lane...well, here we are. :) I'm so glad you jumped in and introduced yourself. It's so fun to meet other readers. I've never been to AZ but my husband has been pushing for us to go since one of his sisters lives there. Hopefully one day. :) And I have to agree with you--Magic Hour blew me away. Each book she finishes, I think she won't be able to top it. THAT book was my favorite and then she starts her next one and I'm swept away again.

Now, for all of you Fireflies who have not watched The King and I--I'm giving you homework. WATCH!! LOL They just DO NOT make movies like that anymore.

Cindy--LOVE the hurricane baby story.

And Lisa, you are so sweet. Thank you for the compliment. I really do want to keep my job (LOL) and all of you are being sooooooo GREAT!! I did promise to reveal a few tidbits about Kristin if you Fireflies posted and since you did...

She writes her books longhand (great for job security!!). But there are times when I'm crying so hard as I'm entering, I stick a note on the office door that says "stay out" because I'm soooooooo not one of those women who cries pretty. No, I'm a big sobbing mess. But she keeps me well supplied with Kleenex so all is good. Well, except I can barely see what I'm supposed to be typing.

She doesn't like chocolate. (I know, I know. How can that be?)

And she really is the nicest, most generous person I've ever met. Beautiful, talented, smart, and nice. I should be incredibly jealous!!! :)

Oh, and she puts up with me. I'm rather an...opinionated employee. (I can just hear Kristin laughing when she reads this).

Hi guys!

I'm Sheila, I'm 24 and have been reading Kristin's books since my senior year in high school.

I'm from the wonderful Kitsap Peninsula, Washington. Kristin does a great job of doing shout-outs to towns here and we love her for it! Next time mention Port Orchard ;)

I did my undergrad at UW and now I'm at WSU studying veterinary medicine.

I don't get to read much for fun. So I like most anything that doesn't have to do with cell signaling pathways. Though if Kristin wrote about those, maybe they'd be more interesting....

I'm currently single (veterinary medicine is 85% female now) and broke (the average vet student debt is $103,000 - yes, six figures of debt).

I love to bake, I'm always running late, I love animals, and I like quality hammock time :)

I have really enjoyed reading all the intros.

I also live outside Washington DC, I have a husband, 2 boys (young teen and preteen) and golden retriever (also a teen boy!).We own our own business and my husband does some other work as well in the education field.

I love Kristin's books and tho I can't remember which one was my first, I think it was Comfort and Joy and I could NOT put it down. I've read several others and enjoyed them as much. I also like mysteries and novels of suspense.

If I had to pick one movie over all others it would be It's A Wonderful Life. I do like older musicals, but I've never seen The King and I.

Kim, my cry is ugly as well, and I've been known to hide out in another room or make sure I'm alone when I read the sad parts of books. I did that with Firefly Lane.

Hey Kim (temporary Queen Firefly) and fellow fireflies,

I'm Leen, a 35 year old female all the way from Belgium. I'm single, hoping to start a family in the future, because I love kids. Which is one of the reasons why for me, also, Magic Hour is one of my favourite novels by Kristin. Even though I've cried the most when I read Firefly Lane. I recently re-read it in Dutch and to my surprise, it made me cry all over again. I haven't decided yet since then whether I love or hate Kristin now... ;)

Other than reading, I also have a soft place in my heart for music (mostly country music or other genres with story-telling lyrics) and I'm so fond of anything to do with Canada that I truly believe the stork just dropped me in the wrong country at the time of my birth.

My job has nothing to do with art, culture or travelling, though. I teach computer science in college, mostly programming languages at this time, but that can change from year to year.

I always wanted to do something with maths, even though I really like to learn languages too, so spelling, grammar, creative writing and poetry still have an important place in my life too. Add to that the fact that some of my fellow fireflies seem to want me to think about a carreer change to stand-up comedy and you can guess why I have no boyfriend... there is just no time for love in the busy life I lead... ;)

Okay, this is THE MOST FUN I've had in soooo long. You Fireflies ROCK!!

Sheila, you and I are practically neighbors!! So, large or small animal vet? My daughter seriously considered becoming a vet, then changed her mind. Now that I see the total cost, hmmmmm, I might be just slightly glad she decided on a different path. :) But I did tell her she should seriously consider dating/marrying a vet so someone else could foot her horse med bills. LOL Though with the 85%female rate, that could be a bit of a problem. :) And always running late, sadly one of my qualities too. (Best quality in a boss: flexible on what time you arrive at work :)

Hello Firefly Lynn! I can't believe how much I have in common with you fireflies. Two sons, hubby who owns own biz and LOVE It's a Wonderful Life--but who couldn't?!?! Funny story about Comfort and Joy. (SPOILER ALERT) As I mentioned before, Kristin writes longhand. So, there I was typing away when I came to the "It came upon a midnight clear. CLEAR. CLEAR." I jumped out of my chair, raced from the office yelling "KRISTIN!!!!!!!!!" I sooooooo did not see that twist coming. Hearing my bellow, Kristin calmly walks toward me and says "I've been waiting ALL DAY for you to get to that part." :)

Whooo Hoooooo Michelle on going for your BA. Huge congrats!! And I'm so telling my kids someone thinks I'm cool. You have made my day!! No, my week...month... :)

Sharon, it is so nice to cyber meet you. I have heard such wonderful things about you from Kristin. Next time you are in town, we need to have a seriously huge party for your five year celebration.

Leen, LOVE the Temporary Queen Firefly title, though it might go straight to my head. :) I so admire you for mastering multiple languages. Four years of Spanish and I retained only one phrase. Pathetic. Truly.

Temp Queen Firefly, Kim
(Yes, it has gone to my head!!! LOL LOL LOL)

I've started this post a few times and always run out of time. LOL!

I'm Naomi and I live in the Twin Cities area of MN. I'm married with no children. We had a dog for 14 years. Denali was my engagement ring and we were both heart broken when he died of old age and cancer on New Year's Eve last year. He will always be in our hearts.

We've been married for 14 years and are still happy to be with each other. Amazing! LOL! My husband is a blessing, though there are days I have to remind myself of that. :-)

I'm from Canada and moved to the USA when I married my American husband. We met at college up in Canada. I've been back to Canada since then, but right now there is no where else I would rather live.

Our home has been under renovations since summer 2005. One day it will be finished. It would have been easier to just tear it down and rebuild, but cheaper to do things this way. Or so I'm told.

I'm a project manager at an online university. I hold a master's degree in Counseling Psychology, have a lifecoaching practice, write fiction (not published...yet!), volunteer at my church and in between all of that try to manage our home.

In the spare time I have left, I read. A lot! Favorite authors are Jill Barnett, Kristin Hannah, JR Ward, Jasper Fforde, Susan Wiggs, Jodi Picoult, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Vince Flynn, Tess Gerritsen....and many many others. I read virtually anything as long as it is well written.

Favorite books: Too many to name, but my favorite KH book is currently Magic Hour though I also love When Lightening Strikes! It was my first KH historical.

Favorite TV: Current shows are Bones, CSI, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Numb3rs. I'm enjoying The Mentalist and Eleventh Hour, but they have to get much better in order for me to keep them on my list. I also loved Firefly when it was on the air. *sigh*

Favorite Movies: Chocolat, Serenity, Finding Nemo, Fifth Element, all the Bourne movies, Love Actually, Heat, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Young Frankenstein, and many, many more!

Wow, I love this "Getting To Know You" section! And not to mention that I'll have that song stuck in my head for days now! LOL
I tend to get dizzy when I read things online so I've printed out all of your wonderful entries and I'm going to read them at work. Then I'll come back and comment on them. Can't wait to meet all the Fireflies!
Well, as you can see, my name is Andrea and I am fortunate enough to live in the same state as Kristin. Although most of her books state that she lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, I'm not exactly sure where she lives. Then again, I'm sure she doesn't want that information broadcast all over the place! I don't blame her!
I'm relatively new to the blogs, but I've been a fan of Kristin's ever since I saw "On Mystic Lake" at Costco. It was the gorgeous blue cover of the paperback that caught my eye, and when I read the blurb on the back, I had to have it. Seriously it was the best book I have ever read! I fell in love with it instantly. I think I read it in like two days and when I finished, I literally tried to start on page one and read it over again.
Like Sheila said, it's wonderful that Kristin takes time out of her busy life to tour the Northwest and meet her readers. I was absolutely thrilled to get to meet her last March in Leavenworth! It was definitely worth the driving through Stevens Pass in the snow, and being scared out of my mind! I'm originally from Texas so I'm still getting used to the passes and so forth. I try to avoid them at all costs!
Anyway, I was very touched that Kristin was so caring and sweet; not that I expected anything less. I was SO nervous, which I guess anyone would be when meeting their idol! LOL My husband came with me and took pictures of us together so I'm going to be sending one to her. She looks much better than I do in them! I started out like I always do when meeting someone famous-I handed her my copy of "On Mystic Lake" to sign and told her it was my "Favorite book in the whole world"! Talk about feeling dumb after opening my mouth! Oh well... I write much better than I talk! I sent my original copy of "Mystic" to a friend but now I really wish I had it back. It was so worn out from being read so many times that the title on the spine was no longer visible. I thought Kristin would get a kick out of seeing how many times I've read that book! I even wrote down the page numbers of my favorite lines and scenes on a post-it and stuck it in the back! I told Kristin that I dream of being a writer and she gave me some good resources, which I deeply appreciated. I cannot wait until February to read "True Colors" and then afterwords, I hope that Kristin will be doing another book tour. It's a great excuse for my husband and I to travel, but we don't need an excuse really. We go on a trip at least once a month. We have decided to do something special this year and spend Christmas in San Diego! I'm praying for warmth, but even sun will do!

I'm going to post again with an introduction to myself but I wanted to share my story of meeting Kristin!

Okay, now here's my official entry!
My name is Andrea and I have lived in Washington State since 1996. I was born in Texas (Austin) and met my husband while living in Dallas. After convincing me to move out of state we took a trip to Seattle in 1995 and that pretty much did it.

I noticed that Kari is a writer, which is very cool. I've written a ton of stories, mainly fan fiction and I've posted about 7 of them on fanfiction.net.

I've attempted writing my own stories with my own characters, and in fact I did write an entire manuscript. I sent it off to the staff at Romantic Times magazine and it was critiqued by an author (whose name I can't remember). I was disappointed to see all the post-it notes and corrections she suggested, but I have to admit it could have been a lot better. My husband keeps telling me to re-write it, but I don't even know where to start.

Anyway, right now I work at a transportation company in Seattle. My job is to schedule van rides for people who can't take regular public transportation. I've been there for 7 years as of this December.

I also work at the Seattle Aquarium as a volunteer, which I've been doing since 1997. I absolutely love it. I am a Special Events volunteer and I help out with art project preparations, and whatever else is needed for us to have the cool events at the aquarium.

In addition to that, I am also on the "Otter Watch" team. Whenever a sea otter is suspected of being pregnant, I am on the team that takes turns doing behavioral research. My favorite shift is the midnight to 4am. Crazy, I know, but it's very peaceful at that time of morning. Any other time and you've got visitors coming in (after 10 anyway) to the aquarium, asking questions which can be distracting when you're trying to concentrate. I tried to do the 8pm to midnight shift, but the one time I did, there was a wedding reception going on and that was really distracting!

My favorites are as follows:

Favorite book-"On Mystic Lake"

Favorite movie-"Sleepless In Seattle" and "Roman Holiday". I switch back and forth!

Favorite Actor-Don't really have one, although I love Tom Hanks and Bill Pullman.

Favorite Actress-The One and only Audrey Hepburn

Favorite Male Singer-without a doubt, Harry Connick Jr. Absolutely amazing singer (and extremely nice! I was fortunate enough to have met him when he was on tour in Vancouver a couple of years ago. He's even more gorgeous in person!) and extremely talented! Best concert ever!

Favorite Female Singer-Amy Grant

Favorite TV series-Seinfeld is my all-time favorite, but I also like Full House and Monk.

Hobbies-I am addicted to message boards and I LOVE to travel! My favorite place to travel is the Oregon Coast.

That's about all I can think of right now. If anyone wants me to add or elaborate on anything, just let me know!

Hello Firefly Naomi. I hear you about always running out of time. Where do the hours go?!?! But you are one busy, busy gal! I know it is not easy to write and work, but keep at it. And please, keep us posted on your progress!! Hugs on the loss of our dog. It is so hard when a beloved pet leaves us. As to your house--I now believe remodeling never comes to an end! Or, at least, not in my household. My hubby is extremely handy but the projects just keep piling up. My comment to visitors, come back in fifty years, hopeful by then we will be done. :) You mentioned several TV shows and movies I haven't watched. I will definitely have to give them a try.

Welcome Firefly Andrea, so glad I wasn't the only King and I fan. :) Every time I see this blog entry, I'm just like you, the song gets stuck in my head!! LOVE the story of when you first met Kristin. So glad I am not the only one who gets tongue-tied when they meet one of their favorite authors. Though it was a bit embarrassing when I first started working for her. I swear it was a good two years before I was able to look her in the eyes and put together a coherent sentence! As to True Colors, don't forget that when Kristin gets back she is going to hold a contest for advance reading copies so you might not have to wait until February! And I'm so excited to see we have another writer in the group. Your husband is absolutely right--if it is your passion, do not give up! Your work at the aquarium sounds fascinating. Otter watch--how cool is that?!?! And they hold weddings at the aquarium? Wow. People are getting so creative with where and how they get married. Love Sleepless in Seattle and Roman Holiday. Love Audrey Hepburn and Seinfeld and Monk. (I'm terrible at remembering who sings what so I will have to pay closer attention. I know I have heard Harry Connick Jr. but titles of his songs are escaping me at the moment).
